If you have just brought a new kitten into your home, you may be thinking ahead to the fun and companionship that your new feline will bring. Besides playing with your cat, you also need to teach which behaviors please you and those that upset you. Since cats are easiest to train during kittenhood, you need to start immediately. The main areas to cover in your kitten training are discussed in this article.

Toys Versus Your Things

Kittens enjoy playing with anything they can find, even if it is your prized breakables. If you can, keep breakables locked away in cabinets. Otherwise, you will need to teach kitty that certain shelves or areas are off limits.

Litter Box Training

Unless you want to replace your flooring soon, you will need to teach kitty to use the litter box. Be sure you have at least two litter boxes, and that your feline can access them at all times. Most felines will instinctively use the litter box once they know the location.

Where to Scratch

Kitty’s claws may be too small to cause much damage right now, but an adult cat can literally destroy your belongings. You need to offer a variety of scratching toys for your pet to use. If you see scratching occurring where it should not, immediately redirect kitty to a scratching toy.

Places that Are Off Limits

Since cats like to climb, they can quickly get in trouble. You probably do not want your kitty to climb your curtains or walk around on your kitchen counters. Remove your feline immediately if you catch him or her in the wrong place.

Socializing

Depending on where kitty lived before coming to your home, he or she may not have gotten much exposure to other people, kids, or animals. Have your pet meet many different people. Your kitten will also need to be introduced to other animal family members. Remember to move slowly with this process, and keep kitty out of harm’s way.

By beginning ;your kitten training effort early and using the tips in this article, you will help to ensure that your pet is also a well-behaved adult.
